2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences.
Artifact: Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
The Engaged Learning Project allowed me to assist a colleague in developing an extended learning experience that used technology, the Georgia Performance Standards, technology standards and instructional resources. I decided to create an 8th grade Social Studies lesson on the Civil War called "Civil War Guided Tour," which included 8th grade English and Social Studies standards. The project should take about three to four weeks to complete with thirty to forty minutes of class time devoted to the project each day. The project includes a "hook" and a weekly plan for implementation. Students use higher-order thinking in the creation of the tour. Adaptations for special needs were included as well as formative and summative assessments to check for understanding.
This assignment demonstrates mastery of standards 2.3 in that students were engaged in using digital tools and resources to create a guided tour of the Civil War. Students have the ability to use PowerPoint or media of their choosing and included actual photos of the Civil War from their assigned year. Students will narrate their tour and then upload their tours to a webpage for other students to view and use. Students have many learning experiences tied into one large project.
I learned that implementing technology takes time as students are on different levels of technology use. This kind of assignment can be difficult to complete for some students. I would like to create a checklist for students to use as they are working through the project. Each check will need to be approved by the teacher before students can proceed to the next task. This will ensure students do not get behind in completing the assignment on time.
This task impacted my development as well as my students. This kind of project was new for me to implement in the classroom. It took patience and learning along with students to complete. Students had the opportunity to use technology they have not used before and were able to finish the assignment with a product they were proud of showing. Grading final products using the rubric created can assess the engaged learning project.
