Artifact: Needs Assessment Survey & Needs Assessment Results
Reflection:
In ITEC 7460, I conducted a needs assessment for my school to determine faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses related to technology integration. In order to do this, I created a needs assessment survey to give to the school faculty and administration. I created the survey using Google Docs. This was my first time using Google Docs to create a survey and I was happy with the results. In administering the survey, I found several technology-related professional learning needs that needed to be addressed. The needs assessment survey and results helped me create my professional learning plan and professional learning session.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 5.1 in that I conducted a needs assessment of my school, developed a technology-based professional learning session and designed a plan to assess the effectiveness of the plan and impact on student learning. The greatest need at my school was training on the Smartboard and other new technologies as well as access to technology.
In completing the survey and needs assessment of my school, I learned that my school has some great resources, however, they are not available to all subject areas. I also learned that many teachers have resources that they do not know how to use. Several teachers were hired after trainings were given and no one ever helped them learn how to implement the technology. This is why I feel regular training should be given throughout the year by a certified teacher that knows what teachers and students need.
This artifact impacts faculty development as well as student learning. The faculty realizes what skills they are lacking in implementing technology as they complete the survey. The faculty that attends training on implementing technology in the classroom will be able to create engaging lessons that impact student learning. Observing teachers using technology in the classroom with students can assess the impact of the Needs Assessment.
