Artifact: Learning Online in Grades K-12: A Review of Literature
Reflection:
The review of literature was written in ITEC 7470. During this class, we learned how to identify informative literature to aid us in research or our career. The review of literature was to be on a topic of interest that included technology. I decided to write my review of literature on online learning in grades k-12. I felt this topic was relevant to me as a young teacher as teaching online could potentially be an option for me in the future. Fifteen scholarly articles were used in writing this review of literature to answer the following questions: (a) how effective is K-12 online education, (b) what are the advantages and disadvantages of K-12 online education, (c) what kinds of students will benefit from K-12 online education, and (d) will K-12 online education affect educator jobs?
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 4.1 in that I identified best practices for all students and teachers in online learning. This review of literature also promotes strategies for achieving equitable access to digital tools and resources for all students.
In completing this review of literature I learned how to identify relevant articles related to my topic, organize my research, organize a review of literature and understand the quantitative and qualitative results of research. Even though this was called a mini literature review, it was not so mini. This assignment was very overwhelming to begin. Once I had all my articles with color-coded highlighting, I just had to jump in. I learned a lot about online education and the different forms available to K-12 students. I felt more confident about the future of online learning and the many options for teachers. To improve this review of literature, I would have included information on the preparation it takes for a traditional teacher to learn how to teach successfully online. Online teaching is an option for educators today whether they are pre-service teachers or traditional teachers. I would like to research more on preparing pre-service teachers as well as traditional teachers.
This review of literature is informative to teachers and parents as it informs them of the benefits of online learning. Many may be skeptical of the success of online learning. This review of literature answers many questions teachers and parents may have if they are looking into online learning for their children. Feedback from teachers and parents can assess the usefulness of the information presented in the review of literature.
