2.6 Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences.
Artifact: Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
The Engaged Learning Project allowed me to assist a colleague in developing an extended learning experience that used technology, the Georgia Performance Standards, technology standards and instructional resources. I decided to create an 8th grade Social Studies lesson on the Civil War called "Civil War Guided Tour." The project should take about three to four weeks to complete with thirty to forty minutes of class time devoted to the project each day. The project includes a "hook" and a weekly plan for implementation. Students use higher-order thinking in the creation of the tour. Adaptations for special needs were included as well as formative and summative assessments to check for understanding.
This assignment demonstrates mastery of standard 2.6 in that I created a learning experience that meets criteria for LoTi Level 4a or above; is linked to the Georgia Performance Standards, Georgia Technology Integration Standards and ISTE NETS-Students of 2007. The learning experience was designed with research-based best practices in mind to engage learning, foster collaboration and allow students to create an authentic product.
I learned that creating an extended learning experience takes careful planning and time. The ultimate goal is to give students an engaging lesson that allows them to use their higher-order thinking skills. This kind of learning stays with students longer and has an impact on their learning that other tasks cannot give. To improve this assignment, I would like to have one example to show students for those that have trouble knowing where to begin. Giving students an example to go by may help them put their thoughts and ideas together on how to go about beginning the project.
This assignment was a learning experience for me as this is the kind of project that I have not implemented before. There are plenty of things that can go wrong with this implementation and this is where I become a learner as well. This project impacts students as it gives them an opportunity to show what they know in a different and more creative way. Students are also learning new technology that can be useful in the coming years. Student learning will be assessed periodically throughout the project to make sure students are retaining information acquired. Project results and student presentations will also be used to assess student learning.
