4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.
Artifact: Internet Safety
Reflection:
The Internet Safety PowerPoint was created in ITEC 7410 to use with our classroom students in helping them understand the do's and don'ts of using the Internet and copyright laws. I researched my school's acceptable use policy as well as copyright laws. I created a student-friendly PowerPoint and presented to my classroom before using the Internet. Students were able to click on links in the PowerPoint to see student-friendly videos of real life instances where students were not responsible using the Internet. The content was relevant to my students and easy to understand.
In creating and implementing the Internet Safety PowerPoint in my classroom, which contains safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of technology, I demonstrated mastery of standard 4.2. Students finally understood what I meant by plagiarism and how to avoid it. Students also learned not to give out personal information as well as Internet bullying. Many students have been the victims of online bullying and the videos that accompanied seemed to get through to many of my students.
In creating this PowerPoint I found some great websites for middle school students to refer to on copyright issues and being safe on the Internet. I also educated myself on many of the complicated copyright issues that teachers need to be cognizant of. I also found great resources to share with colleagues and found the opportunity to discuss with teachers the importance of talking with their students about these issues. I would like to present this information at our parent night during the school year. It is a night when parent's tour the school to see what their children have been working on. It is also a great time to educate parents about the technology their children are using in the classroom and at home. Parents need to be more involved with what their children are doing online and this would be a great opportunity to get them involved.
This PowerPoint benefited teachers and students at my school. Many teachers do not discuss safety issues with their students as it is already in the student handbook. However, many students do no read the handbook and do not know what it contains. I believe it is important to bring these issues up on a regular basis in the classroom. Teachers at my school now have the resources needed to incorporate Internet Safety in the classroom. This information impacts students as they are real issues that students have already encountered. Students need to be constantly reminded of Internet Safety and how to protect themselves. The impact of the Internet Safety PowerPoint can be assessed by observing students in the lab as well as assessing students on their knowledge of Internet Safety.
