Artifact: Online Course Syllabus
Reflection:
The online course syllabus was created for a 4-6 week online learning experience. I was able to create an online learning experience for a 6th grade mathematics classroom on probability. I created the outline for the course first and then used my outline to help with creating the syllabus. I researched forms of communication, online testing procedures, conduct and academic honesty policies, acceptable use policies, students right to privacy, online communication guidelines and technology requirements. These were only a few sections of the course syllabus.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 3.3 in that I developed an online learning experience to support student learning. Creating this online course allowed me to apply what I've learned about technology and engaging students. I hope to be able to incorporate the online learning experience I created into my classroom this upcoming year.
In completing this artifact, I learned about important components of an online syllabus and their relevance. Each section that was included gave important information to students and their parents on what to expect during the online course. Course information, grading policies as well as legal issues were included in the syllabus and are important for students in understanding their rights and responsibilities. To improve this artifact, I would like to have gained feedback from an online teacher about what to add or take away from the syllabus. I feel that feedback from a 6th grade online teacher would be most beneficial as he or she would teach the same ages that I prepared the syllabus for.
Creating this syllabus impacted my development as a teacher and technology facilitator. I feel that I have the ability to create an online syllabus for other classes and help other teachers create their own. I do not know many teachers that have created an online syllabus before. This can help me as I continue to learn about teaching online and hopefully continue to obtain my Teaching Online endorsement. The impact can be assessed by gaining feedback from other online teachers and well as the students and parents in my online class.
